DSP is the fastest moving technology in audio and home theater. But even as powerful as today's DSPs are getting, they can't overcome physics though they are getting better at overcoming suboptimal subwoofer placement. It is fairly common knowledge that multiple subwoofers provides more even bass in a room (thanks to Todd Welti and others) as compared to a single subwoofer. This can be easily heard by playing a single subwoofer and walking around the room. The corners will sound boomy and somewhere near the middle of the room, the bass will drop out where there is a null. This is due to the long bass waves interacting with the dimensions of the room and multiple subwoofers in multiple positions will even out the bass and eliminate many nulls.  The idea behind the bass array is to place multiple in a room to gain the aspects of multiple subwoofers in a room but goes further by focusing on even placement both horizontally and vertically on a wall.  If you place subwoofers evenly on the front and rear walls, well, you've done about the best you can from a physics standpoint. Then Trinnov Waveforming or Dirac ART advanced DSPs can take that incredible starting point and add their magical algorithms on top to get the best bass possible in your room.
